The buzz coming into opening weekend for Fireproof gave every indication that the box office numbers would be substantial. Many of the biggest talk shows were featuring the movie or interviews with lead actor Kirk Cameron. Fireproof ranked number one in online ticket sales on Fandango. Churches around the country were encouraging congregations to attend.
So how did it compare with other movies in theaters including other movies debuting this weekend?
Number 4 in box office receipts behind Eagle Eye (debut), Nights in Rodanthe (debut), and Lakeview Terrace, and ahead of Burn After Reading.
Number 4 movie in per-theater receipts behind The Duchess, Appaloosa, and Eagle Eye, and ahead of Nights in Rodanthe)
Number 12 all time among Christian movies. Given the buzz behind this movie, Fireproof is likely to finish its run in theaters as high as number 4, behind only The Passion of the Christ, and the two Chronicles of Narnia movies. By comparison, Facing the Giants (the previous film by Sherwood Pictures and Stephen and Alex Kendrick) holds the number 10 spot.
Number 12 on Amazon. The Love Dare book (actually created from the plot element of the movie) is soaring on the bestseller book charts.
To give a comparison at how well Fireproof did on opening weekend, its $6.5 million box office gross looks paltry compared to Eagle Eye at $29.2 million, Lakeview Terrace at $25.7 million, and Nights in Rodanthe at $13.6 million. But consider that those blockbuster films cost in the tens of millions to make, while Fireproof's budget was just $500,000, and you get a different perspective. And Fireproof was only in 839 theaters, compared to 2,400-3,600 for the other three.
If you want a comparison with Facing the Giants, that movie premiered almost exactly two years ago in about half as many theaters as Fireproof and made only about one-fifth as much on opening weekend. It took Facing the Giants more than five weeks to haul in as much money as Fireproof had on its first three days. Hopefully, Fireproof will have the longevity of it's Sherwood Pictures predecessor, which stayed in theaters another 16 weeks and garnered another $9.8 million.
As of this writing, few critics have taken a shot at Fireproof yet, and the user reviews are mixed.
